Civil War Rifle Greene Breech-Loading Bolt Action Oval Bore
Description: NSN, .53 caliber, 35” barrel with excellent, bright oval bore rifling. The metal has retained much of the original blue finish which blends smoothly into a mellow plum-brown patina with mild silvering at muzzle, as well as along the projecting surfaces and edges. The ring-shaped, bottom mounted hammer and trigger guard tang have some visible portions of the original bright blue that blends into a mixed gray, and plum-brown patina. The bolt itself has a significant amount of original blue still present on the handle with streaks of gray metal along the blued body. The walnut stock has light surface blemishes and handling marks scattered about the otherwise excellent original oil finish. The buttplate retains traces of original blue and a coarse bristle bore brush is present in the stock compartment. The rifle is mechanically excellent and a correct, trumpet-shaped ramrod is included. The Greene was sold to Russia just prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, when it became the first bolt action rifle adopted by the US Ordnance Department, with a total of 900 pieces purchased. Some very small quantities were sold to various state militia units via William Read & Sons. This is a very good-fine example of a desirable US rifle and would make a great addition to any collection.
