Harpers Ferry Made Type III Model 1816 .69 Caliber 3-band Musket
Description: Extra Fine Condition Type III Model 1816 Harpers Ferry .69 Caliber 3-band Musket Armory Converted to Percussion: The US Model 1816 musket, the last flintlock martial arm to be produced for the U.S. Army, had a colorful history spanning over 50 years and two major armed conflicts. It had the highest production of any U.S. issued flintlock musket, attesting to its craftsmanship and reliability. It was produced at both the Springfield and Harpers Ferry Armories in approximately equal amounts. Between 1816 and 1844 the musket design was enhanced from a “Type I” to a “Type II” and finally to a “Type III”. This particular Type III example started life as a flintlock, with lockplate showing manufacture at the Harpers Ferry Armory in 1838. Given its overall condition and its relatively late date of manufacture, it is reasonable to presume it was never issued for field service.before conversion to percussion. Sometime in the mid or late 1850’s it was updated at the Harpers Ferry Armory by installing a new breech piece with an integrated bolster and cleanout screw, and retooling the lock mechanism to be percussion rather than flintlock, with a replacement hammer. The musket is in overall very fine condition and is all original and complete, including ramrod. All metal is in original uncleaned armory bright without pitting or other damage. The walnut stock is solid and shows good original military finish, but does have some minor comestic dings and a shallow carved “H” on the left side. The bore is bright and good. The stamps on the metal are crisp: eagle, dating and armory stamps on the lock plate; “U.S.” on the butt plate; “s” on the barrel bands, and consistent “6” assembly stamps on most components, including screws and band springs. Multiple maker stamps are also found on the lock inlet, reverse lock flat, and tang/wrist area of the wood. The replacement of the breach apparently removed the prior 3 original stamps and dating on the rear top of the former barrel breach and tang. Both the underside of the barrel and new breach are stamped with a conversion number of “87”, with an adjacent struck stamp of “I”. This probably indicates the conversion was done by a member of the Innes family (Charles, Gregory or William), all of whom were armorers working on guns throughout the 1850’s at the Harpers Ferry Armory.
