Joseph Lang & Sons Side By Side Double Rifle .500 BPE
Description: Joseph Lang & Sons Double Rifle .500 BPE
The consignment rifle is a Joseph Lang & Sons Double Rifle .500 BPE. It was made by Joseph Lang & Sons for an "H Carson esq." who we learned is Thomas Henry Carson Esq, (born 11/24/1843 - died 6/30/1917).
The firearm appears to be in fine working order and was most recently use to take a Cape buffalo. In addition to the rifle , included are 2 cards of .50 sabots, approximately 66 pieces of brass, 16 loaded rounds (must be shipped separately), cartridge holders, a lead mold and RCBS reloading dies (.500 Nitro/BPE). Length of Pull (LOP) is 13.5” to the wood butt, 14.25” including the butt pad. Drop is 1.5” and 2.0”. The barrels are 28”. This rifle is in very good condition and is a classic. You see shotguns but you rarely see the double rifle available.
This very nice double rifle was inspected by Champlain Firearms in Oklahoma prior to an African trip. The gun was physically examined, bores examined and lockup checked, etc.
The caliber is .500 Black Powder Express (BPE). The caliber survives today and is essentially loaded with mild loadings of modern smokeless powder developed through trial. Included will be load data as provided by the owner for this gun.
The obituary of the original owner, Thomas Henry Carson, states he was a real estate attorney and he was the only son of a reverend, married twice (although no mention of why two wives or even the names of the women). No children are listed. He was a member of cycling clubs and the Alpine Club. The Alpine Club is still in existence but (now) is exclusively mounting climbing in the Alps. He published Carson Real Estate Statutes and several other real estate law journals and books. According to his obituary his vacations were largely spent in adventure sports, traveling and mountain climbing. Following his death in 1917 we have no records of how the firearm was bequeathed but it was purchased by our client, inspected, and used to take the aforementioned buffalo.
Joseph Lang began gun making in 1821 and had a lot to do with development and popularization of the breaking gun. He is also known for his development of the .470 Nitro Express for big game hunting.
