Nazi Era J.P. Sauer & Sohn Drilling - 16 Gauge Double Over 8x57 JRS Rifle
Description:
For one reason or another most older drillings that we encounter are not guns one would use today. They are either chambered in an obsolete caliber or they are well used and would not be safe to fire regularly. This J.P Sauer & Sohn is the exception. It was made in January of 1943 under Nazi supervision and is chambered in 16 Gauge and 8x57 JRS. Both the shot shells and the rifle ammo are readily available today, and this drilling is in excellent condition. The bores in all three barrels are perfect, there are strong case colors on the action, and the original blue finished parts rate 95%+/-. This Sauer also has a very attractive European Walnut stock set with lots of fiddleback grain showing. This drilling was made by very skilled craftsman using J.P. Sauer's strong scalloped box lock action featuring side clips and three fasteners. The attention to detail and great skill involved in building this drilling is apparent when you examine this fine firearm. This is particularly remarkable given the circumstances of the time in 1943. The war had become much harder for the Germans to supply by 1943, and there was immense pressure on all the small arms manufacturers in Nazi Germany to build military firearms as quickly and as efficiently as possible. Production of commercial arms had really been reduced and the overall quality of commercial firearms had declined for many manufacturers. The small numbers of commercial firearms available at this time often went to ranking members of the Nazi party or active servicemen as private purchase items. This drilling is proof that J.P. Sauer & Sohn was still producing high quality arms when many others were not. This drilling would be an excellent addition to any historical arms collection, and would make an excellent field gun as well.
