ISAAC CURTIS Inspected ENFIELD 1853 Rifle-Musket
Description: ISAAC CURTIS Inspected ENFIELD 1853 Rifle-Musket CIVIL WAR Import to Confederacy with Multiple Marks Here we present an antique Enfield Pattern 1853 Three Band Rifle-Musket, made circa 1860 in London, England. The P’53 was the British Military Ordnance Board’s choice for adoption as the primary long arm in 1853. These are chock full of history as they were used in the Crimean War from 1854 to 1856, the Sepoy Mutiny from 1857 to 1858, the New Zealand Land Wars that ended in 1872, and many various other conflicts, especially in colonies in British Imperial possession in the 1850s, 60s and 70s. Many were sold to both the Union and Confederacy during the American Civil War. This example is one of those that was inspected by Isaac Curtis for the Confederacy during the early years of the American Civil War. The inside of the lock is marked “AW”, as is the underside of the barrel. The top left of the barrel is marked with London commercial proof marks. The left side of the stock, opposite the lock, is marked “S.F. HOOPES” twice in a V shape around the rear lock screw, “W. HUGHES” vertically at the back of the flat, and “IC” for Isaac Curtis in an oval cartouche. The breech and breech plug of the barrel are both marked “WM”. “AW” is most likely a maker’s mark, while the “WM” is possibly an inspection mark. Comes with original sling. The overall condition is near fine. The original blue finish has turned a solid brown. Case colors are still faintly visible on the lock. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is smooth and solid, showing period handling marks. The bore is crisp and clean. The action is excellent. Sling is a little thin in the front, but is still intact. Here is a fantastic example of a Confederate inspected Enfield 1853 Rifle-Musket! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 39 inches. Caliber: .577 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
