Holland and Holland .577 3" Blackpowder Express double rifle
Description: Because of its weight of 10 pounds 14 ounces this Holland double was built for the 167 grain 3" case load so liked by Sir Samuel Baker. A very powerful rifle even by todays standards. It was ordered by Col. Frederick William Romilly of the Guards Camel Corp. which fought at the Battle of Abu Klea in the effort to relieve Kartoum! The steel barrels themselves weigh 5 pounds 12 ounces and are 26 1/8 inches long. This double rifle was restocked with a magnificent piece of Walnut and the rifle was then sent to Leslie A Paul, Gunmaker in Canada from Henry Atkin and approved by James Purdey and Sons for mainrenance and repairs, who sent it to Turnbull for color hardening then sent back to him made sure it was tight on the face. The rifling is strong with some very minor piting. The rifle has side clips. No pitting in the chambers. Engraving covers about 80% of the action, hammers and locks. The barrels have a flip up night sight and one fixed and two flipup rear sights. The color hardening remains at over 95% and the barrels retain about 90% of an older rust blue. The grip cap is steel and there is a shadow lined cheek piece. The butt stock has Silvers style recoil pad. The case is an original period Holland and Holland oak and leather that has been partially relined and is in good condition. The top of the case has an old black "X" on the lid, signifying it was transported by ship with other rifles belonging to a British Regiment. The case contains a cleaning rod, original case crimper, oil bottle, original English powder measure, a brass cleaning brush and mop. Also included is a modern made original style .577 3 " manual sizing die. The forend has a lever release and is in excellent condition.
