#4069, Holland & Holland, 33 Bruton Street, London: A Holland 458 Winchester Magnum Mauser Action Bolt Rifle Finished about 1982, 25" barrel with a band island sight with 1 standing & 1 folding rear sights, Banded front sight, Spring locking fold-up sight protector, Barrel band sling eye, It has factory installed H&H single Lever Detachable scope mounts, 1.5 x 4.5 Swarovski scope, Full adjustable trigger, Belly magazine box with a straddle hinged floorplate with a center bow release, It has a matted receiver ring and the rear scope base is matted on top, It has a classic H&H stock with a shadowline cheekpiece and a monte carlo comb, Trap grip cap with a spare front sight, Wrap around point pattern checkering, Steel crossbolt at the recoil lug, 14 1/4" L.O.P. over a 7/8" leather pad, 10 lbs. 2 oz. without the scope & 11 lbs. 2 oz. with. This rifle was the “camp gun” at the Holland & Holland’s safari area in southern Tanzania. When Holland & Holland closed their safari operations, the rifle was shipped back to London and went through a complete refurbishment. The current owner bought the rifle and shipped it to the US. It was only shot at the range and never hunted. The wood is as stout as new, the blue remains at 99%, the stock finish is at 98-99%, the checkering remains at 100% and the bore is excellent plus. It is all Holland from muzzle to butt. With today’s modern factory ammo and powders, the 458 performs as it should. The 458 got a bad rap in earlier days due to ammo with compressed loads resulting in pressure problems and later ammo that fell short of the original velocity specs to avoid the pressure problems. Those days are gone with factory ammo with powders that don’t require compressed loads and powders that are heat stable, very important for African hunting. This very rifle shot the factory Hornady 500 gr ammo at 2,150 fps with both softs and solids over a chronograph in 96 degree weather. The owner also developed a load with 72 gr of AA2230 powder with the Woodleigh 480 gr 458 Win. Mag. bullets which produced 2,230 fps in 96 degrees over the chronograph with plenty of room in the case. Both factory loads and the handloads didn’t exhibit any inconsistencies or signs of pressure. The rifle and the ammo were left in the sun for hours before the rounds were shot through the chronograph to stimulate being out in the mid-day heat of Africa. The 458 will do anything a 450-470 Nitro cartridge can do and does it better, consistently and reliably under African conditions. With the 480 gr bullets the 458 will approach 458 Lott performances without the recoil. It will shoot cloverleaf groups with softs and solids. The gun shows as new and is ready to go back to Africa with you for buffalo and elephant. Long live the 458 Win Mag!
