A FINE QUALITY FLINTLOCK "PENNSYLVANIA/KENTUCKY” "BENCH/" MATCH"-TYPE TARGET RIFLE" by "T. BENNETT", ca. 1840
Description: A FINE QUALITY FLINTLOCK "PENNSYLVANIA/KENTUCKY "BENCH/" MATCH"-TYPE TARGET RIFLE" by "T. BENNETT", ca. 1840: Of traditional Pennsylvania/Kentucky Long Rifle form with a pin-fastened, octagonal, 47 ½", rifled, heavy, "Match"/Target type, .60 caliber, iron barrel with generally smooth steel-gray surfaces with scattered discoloration & age-patina. The top of the "scroll" engraved breech with its original iron buckhorn rear sight and the muzzle with its dovetailed, brass, blade-type, front sight. Also marked with a "T. BENNETT" maker's signature, in block type characters. (Please see F. Sellers': "American Gunsmiths", pg. 25). Molded & carved, nicely figured, Tiger Maple, full stock of Lancaster styling with raised carved details, around the lock and sideplate mortises; and made with a nicely sculpted raised cheek-piece, on the left side of the buttstock. Three (3) sheet-brass ramrod pipes, a faceted brass trigger-guard with a "Kentucky Rifle" type rear finger-spur and a faceted rectangular forward finial: Double set triggers. A sheet-brass fore-end-cap, A brass side bolt-escutcheon-- for the single iron side bolt; and two decorative sheet-brass inlays, en suite. A classically styled crescent-type, brass buttplate with a faceted upper finial: the toe-plate with the release for the patchbox-cover. Four-Piece, openwork & engraved, brass patchbox with a sculpted pineapple-type forward finial and a matching floral-scroll engraved lid. The lid with its inner spring/release and the toe of the buttstock with a sheet-brass toe-plate with its iron push-button release: interior with lightly aged surfaces. Also, adorned with several engraved "silver" & brass inlays, including a large Silver Starburst, above the cheek-piece, several octagonal silver medallions and six oval barrel-pin escutcheons. The Commercial/Trade-type Flintlock mechanism with a "WARRANTED" marking, under the bridled powder-pan of the rounded and lightly engraved flat lockplate. Reinforced type hammer, a refaced frizzen, teardrop finial frizzen spring; and in overall very good+ original flintlock condition with smooth steel surfaces with a nicely engraved Game Bird depiction, on its tail. The barrel with generally sharp contours with scattered patches of discoloration/pitting. The lock, en suite with smooth, gunmetal-gray-colored surfaces and some expected patches of discoloration/pitting and surface-oxidation—-from use/firing. Very good stock with 75%+ finish, fine contours and carved details. The buttstock with a nicely sculpted cheek-piece. Some scattered handling marks, tight hairlines and signs of use/wear. Plain Hickory ramrod. A graceful Pennsylvania "Kentucky Heavy Bench/Match Rifle", ca. 1840. Of better than usual quality with a more graceful appearance: an impressive example of these distinctive American Longarms. Overall length, 63 1/4". Weight: 21 lbs.
