Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle by Robbins, Kendall & Lawrence
Description: Original Unaltered Robbins Kendall & Lawrence Model 1841 .54 Caliber Smoothbore Musket, a.k.a., “Mississippi Rifle”. Features 33” round barrel with concave faced brass tip ramrod, 2 band fastened walnut stock with brass furniture, fixed notch rear sight with brass blade front sight, sling swivels & patch box. Lock marked ROBBINS/KENDALL &/LAWRENCE/U.S. forward of the hammer with WINDSOR VT/1847 marked at tail. Top of buttplate stamped U.S. with visible inspector mark “G” present on both sideplate & trigger guard with two faint but visible cartouches marked on left side of stock. The M-1841 was the first issued percussion long arm adopted by the U.S. Military. Due to its effectiveness at Buena Vista in the Mexican American War by the 1st Mississippi Volunteer Infantry Regiment (“The Mississippi Rifles”) the term “Mississippi Rifle” was given to the U.S. M-1841. This is one of about 10,000 rifles produced by this contractor between 1845-1848 & was the only arms contract produced by this firm. The rifles produced by Robbins, Kendall & Lawrence made up 11% of the total M-1841’s manufactured between 1843-1855. Overall, very good condition with lock showing a dark grey patina with crisp markings, barrel carries a spotted grey patina with some pitting at breech & tang. Walnut stock is very good with typical use marks scattered throughout with brass furniture in very good condition being unpolished showing only light marks. Mechanically sound with crisp action. A nice example of The M-1841 “Mississippi Rifle” that would make a great addition to any Civil War collection. SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Antique: Yes |
