Springfield Rifle Musket Model 1863
Description: NSN, .58 caliber, 40” barrel with a very good bore that has some light freckling and pitting within the grooves. This is a Type II rifle-musket has an 1864 dated lockplate and matching date barrel. The metal was thoroughly cleaned long ago, but has begun to develop a dull gray patina with some softened edges, but the markings are still clear and legible. There is some mild pitting and freckling around the nipple and bolster with some darker mottling on the hammer. The walnut stock is likewise in very good condition with an added oil finish over scattered minor handling marks and sanded wood that has obscured the inspector's cartouche. The musket comes with a correct Model 1855 socket bayonet that has dark spots of freckling within the hollow-ground back flutes, and some rough “blood-spotting” along the edges of the central fuller. A correct and original tulip-headed ramrod is also included. This is a very good-near fine example of a correct and war dated U.S. musket, and would make a great addition to any collection.
