Swedish Rolling Block Rifle Model 1867/89 Excellent Condition
Description: Serial #12560 (Conversion #174), 8 x 58mm (Danish Krag), 33” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is an 1874 manufactured rifle with all matching numbers that was converted to 8mm in 1891 by the Carl Gustafs arsenal. The barrel retains 97-98% of the original blue with some faint silvering on the muzzle and edges of the flats at the breech, as well as some specks of dark plum-brown freckling, mostly near the muzzle. The frame has 80-85% of the original color case-hardening remaining with the balance turned to a smooth, mottled gray patina. The breechblock and hammer have an armory bright finish with a few negligible spots of freckling visible. The forend and buttstock are in excellent condition with only some small handling marks and minor blemishes marring the otherwise fine, light colored wood. The brass unit disk is still present on the right side of the butt, and there is a small hole drilled into the belly of the buttstock, where what was probably a sling swivel was once installed. The robust action functions flawlessly, and a correct metal ramrod is also included. These rifles were converted to the small bore Krag round from the earlier 12.17mm RF/CF chambering as a stop-gap solution prior to the adoption of the Mauser magazine rifles and carbines. They required extensive reworking by the arsenal and utilized a unique, spring catch equipped socket bayont (see item #30511 on this site). This example is in excellent condition overall and would make a great addition to any collection.
