1942 Nagoya Type 99 Rifle & Mukden Type 30 Arisaka Bayonet w/ Scabbard
SOLD
Description: We are pleased to offer this "fresh out of the attic" Japanese Type 99 rifle by Nagoya Arsenal and Type 30 Arisaka bayonet mfg. by Mukden Arsenal for sale. This Nagoya Type 99 rifle is all matching, and in all-original condition with an intact mum. It has a serial number matching dust cover and the original monopod which you don't see too often, but it is missing the magazine follower and spring, the "airplane sights", and one screw and nosecap from the upper barrel band. This is somewhat strange as typically the examples we see have the "airplane sights" but don't have the monopod or dust cover. Upon examining the rear sight it looks as though the "airplane sights" have been off of this rifle for a very long time. It could be argued that they were removed upon initial issue due to the lack of any signs of wear they would cause on the sight ladder. This Type 99 looks like a veteran of multiple Pacific Theater battles. The stock has battle damage in numerous places. There are gouges, cracks, and dents from one end of the stock to the other. It most certainly was taken off of a KIA soldier or picked up off the battlefield after an engagement. It did not take long for these 99's to get rough looking in the Pacific Theater of WW2 with the salty environment and fierce fighting that took place. The serial number of this Type 99 is 87,611 of the 3rd series manufactured by Nagoya, making it's date of manufacture sometime in late 1942. The original blue finish it left Nagoya Arsenal with has been weathered and worn to a dull brown-gray patina. This patina is consistent on all of the metal parts that are exposed, but there is still visible blue finish in some of the protected areas. The bore is pretty good, a little dark but with strong rifling and no significant pitting. Everything still works 100% like it is supposed to, and the bolt seems to lock up tight. This rifle comes with the bayonet and scabbard that it came back with, a Type 30 Arisaka bayonet made by the Mukden Arsenal. This arsenal was located in Manchuria and had substantially less production than some of the other arsenals making it a somewhat scarce bayonet today. It is an early production blued finish Type 30, with a hooked quillon, a fullered blade, wooden handles attached by machine screws, and a contoured "birds head" pommel. Externally it looks just like the Type 99 rifle. The blued finish has mostly turned brown-gray and the wood handles have some dents and dings. The blade however, has remained in good condition being that it was protected in the scabbard. It retains 80% of the original blued finish with a sharp tip and no significant chipping on the edges. The locking lug still works perfectly, and it has plenty of spring pressure left to stay locked securely to the rifle when attached. If you have been looking for a good honest veteran bring-back Type 99 rifle and bayonet that won't break the bank this would be the perfect choice!!
