Model 1855 .58 Caliber U.S. Percussion 3-Band Rifle-Musket With functional Maynard System
Description: Model 1855 .58 Caliber U.S. Percussion 3-Band Rifle-Musket: From Flayderman, 9th edition, page 567: “Model 1855 U.S. Percussion Rifle-Musket: Made by the Springfield and Harpers Ferry Armories, c. 1857-1861; total quantity 59,773. .58 caliber single shot muzzleloader, 40” round barrel fastened by three barrel bands; cleanout screw on bolster. Iron mountings with brass forend cap. All metal parts finished bright. Steel ramrod with tulip shapped end and swelled shank. Front sight doubles as lug for angular bayonet. Earliers models have a long range sight with large leaf and were made without patchbox. Walnut stock. This model proved one of the staple arms of the Civil War, and was the first U.S. martial arm firing the Minie bullet in .58 caliber.” This example was manufactured at the Springfield Armory in 1858. It is all original and complete, and in very good condition, most importantly with a rare fully functional Maynard lock system. It remains in original armory bright. Mechanics are excellent. Maynard system advances properly through half and full cocks. Butt plate “U.S.”stamp is distinct. Bore is bright, showing good lands and grooves, with some minor rough patches. Exterior barrel, barrel bands and trigger guard appear to have been cleaned some time ago, rendering certain year and proof marks on the barrel faint, while still visible (see pictures). There is minor pitting at the very rear of the barrel near the tang, and on two of the barrel bands. While the walnut stock has minor creases reflecting previous drying of the wood, there is no cracking and the stock is dead solid, retaining excellent original finish. The rear long range ladder sight is excellent, still with crisp calibration markings. The original tulip ramrod with retaining swell is excellent.
