VIETNAM 1ST AIR CAV. CAPTURE RUSSIAN MOSIN NAGANT TYPE 44 OR M 44 CARBINE W/HISTORY. Captured in 1969 by Captain Rocky Colavita and his Company D, 2nd Bn., 8th Cavalry Regiment of the famous 1st Cavalry Division as part of an extensive sweep of War Zone C just 53 miles north of Saigon in 1968. Accompanying the gun are copies of two military newspaper articles detailing the events about the operation mentioning Captain Colavita and a copy of his new book about his Vietnam War experiences with the 1st Cavalry Division titled “COMPANY GRADE/ MEMOIR OF AN ANGRY SKIPPER”, published by Hellgate Press (2015). A hand written dedication in the front of the book tells about the capture of the gun, it’s return to Ft. Belvoir and lists it’s serial number and that it was discovered in bunkers by his Company (D2/8). Also included are his original Vietnam Combat Certificate from the 1st Cavalry Division. The standard Izhevsk Armament Factory Type 44 is dated on the receiver ring 1944 and has the worn Russian WW2 era “HAMMER AND CYCLE” markings. It shows the kind of wear and dings one would expect from it’s history but is very good plus and in good working order and with matching serial numbers.. Even has an excellent bore. Exceptional and historic.
