1928 Savage Model 99 Take Down in 30-30 Win. with Custom Wood
SOLD
Description: For sale we have a very attractive custom Savage Model 1899 Take-Down chambered in 30-30 Winchester. The Savage Model 99 had one of the longest production runs in modern rifles. This rifle was made from 1899 all the way to 1997 with only a short break in production during World War 2. This rifle was offered in many different chamberings but the .30 caliber cartridges were the most popular. One of the notable features in this lever gun that made it unique was the rotary magazine with a visible cartridge counter. This allowed shooters to enjoy the ever popular lever action but with calibers with pointed bullets that were unsafe in tubular magazine contemporaries. This particular Model 99 T.D. serial number 305,539 was made by Savage in 1928 as a standard rifle. At some point in this rifle's life it was refinished and custom high grade wood was added. It appears to be an old refinish, most likely done in the 1950's or 60's. It was certainly professionally done as the work looks top notch and not a do-it-yourself in your garage job. The bluing is uniform in color and even. I would rate it at 97% on the refinished blue with some tiny handling marks and a tiny bit of thinning at the muzzle. The lever is more of a plum color, most likely due to the different metal alloy used in construction and because it was originally case colored. The bore of this rifle is pristine. It is bright and free from pitting from chamber to muzzle. The rifling looks very strong with crisp and sharp lands and grooves. It does not appear to have been fired much over it's life. The stock set on this rifle is absolutely beautiful. Both the forearm and buttstock have lots of figure in them and they have a nice tight wood to metal fit. The stocks are free from cracks and repairs and only have very minor handling marks on them. This rifle is 100% functional. Every feature works as it should from the cartridge counting magazine to the cocking indicator that pops up on the rear or the receiver. The rifle comes apart easily when taken down and the threads on the barrel are clean and sharp. The forearm snaps securely to the barrel and the barrel indexes perfectly to the receiver. This is a very nice Savage 99 that would make a great addition to any Savage or American sporting rifle collection.
