Incredible Sharps
Long Range No.2 Target Rifle with factory Letter
Description: Serial #156535, .44-2 5/8" Sharps (.44-90), 34" octagon barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a handsome Bridgeport-made rifle (one of only about 260 or so manufactured) with all matching numbers that retains 97-98% of the original blue finish along the barrel with trace silvering along the facet edges and at the muzzle. The frame retains a commensurate amount of the original vivid color case-hardening while the firing pin retains most of its original bright nitre blue. The nicely figured walnut pistol grip buttstock and forend have scattered minor handling marks in the period applied piano varnish finish with a rounded horn schnabel tip, horn grip cap, and a single hairline crack running back from rear tip of the lockplate to the tip of the top tang (the crack is quite small and is stable; it doesn't flex at all and does not run deeply into the grain). There is a minor surface drying crack at the heel of the butt on the right side where the grain has separated slightly over the years. The rifle is equipped with an original front wind gauge sight with spirit level mated to the original long range Vernier tang sight on matching numbered base (the post for the vernier sight necessitated the factory partially offsetting the serial number on the top tang, and is visible when the sight is removed). A second, base has been neatly added to the heel of the butt to facilitate recumbent position shooting. The rifle comes with a 2008 dated letter from Dr. Labowskie which states that this rifle is listed in the original Sharps records as having been invoiced to the well known Boston sporting goods firm of John P. Lovell & Sons on April 8, 1876. Also included with the rifle are approximately 390 new brass .44-90 cases, two complete sets of bullet mould blocks, complete CNH die set, top punch set for an RCBS/Lyman Lubrisizer, and a newly made dark brown suede protective sleeve for the rear sight. This is an excellent original Sharps rifle in fine overall condition, still range-ready after 138 years, and would make a fantastic addition to any collection.
