SHARPS MODEL 1874 OLD RELIABLE 45-70 CAL. BUFFALO RIFLE W/FACTORY LETTER CA. 1878.
Description: SHARPS MODEL 1874 OLD RELIABLE 45-70 CAL. BUFFALO RIFLE W/FACTORY LETTER CA. 1878. 30” octagon heavy barrel stamped on top flat “SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT, CONN” and “OLD RELIABLE” within a cartouche. Weighs 11 ½ lbs. Lawrence’s Patent rear sight and factory nickel blade front sight. Left side of barrel with tiny caliber stamp “ cal. 2 1/10” for .45-70 Govt. All original and complete with matching serial number in the 160,5xx range. Factory double set triggers. Very good plus condition with approximately 50% blue on barrel and frame , lock and hammer with 20-30% case hardening particularly in the recesses. Stock and forend with old original finish with wear and minor dings. Thin sliver out of forend on top and right left sides. Very good bore with well defined rifling. Triggers in perfect working order. 100% original example and not on the market in many years. The Factory Records Letter states that it was invoiced to Arthur S. Winchester, last President of Sharps and part of a 100 gun order and further states that it was probably intended for shipment to Wm. Burkhardt, the Sharps dealer in St. Paul, Minnesota since many of the guns in the shipment have turned up in “the Dakotas and Montana” and “along the rout of the Northern Pacific Railroad”.
