Spencer Model 1865 Saddle Ring Carbine
Description: Fine Condition M1865 Spencer Repeating Carbine ... In November 1864 The US Ordnance Department requested an improved Model 1865 Spencer carbine be manufactured in 50 caliber with a 20” round barrel. Spencer made 23,000 with six-groove rifling and Burnside Rifle Company made another 34,000 or so with 3 groove rifling. In March of 1865 the Department added the requirement of a Stabler cut-off system. This M1865 with serial number 1,XXX is one of the earlier production carbines produced by Spencer (made before the end of the war) & predates that final improvement. This example is in fine condition overall with very good bore showing strong rifling. Metal surfaces showing good original finish mixed with a pleasing patina. Stocks are very good with sharp edges, showing faint cartouche behind saddle ring. Crisp markings throughout including “M1865” stamped on barrel. A super example of a late Civil War & early Indian War period carbine that predates the Stabler cut-off system which was ordered by the Ordnance Dept. in March 1865. These early M1865s made it into the field & saw service before Lee surrendered; this low numbered gun is one of those. A solid example of a very early M1865 Spencer Carbine.
