1903 SPRINGFIELD COMPLETE ACTION ONLY PROTOTYPE MADE WITH NO SERIAL NUMBER - MINTY - SUPER RARE -
Description: There are 6 each Prototype 1903 Springfields known, all made without serial numbers in 1901 and in various configurations for testing. These are in private as well as Springfield Armory collections. No one knows how many receivers were made but this is one with early features, no serial number etc. evidently never made into a firearm as the other 6 were (see Brophy, The Springfield 1903 Rifles). These actions were made by hand and used to hasten testing prior to the first 5,000 production run. Brophy describes this on page 9 of his book referenced above. An extremely rare part of US Military History and Springfield Armory History. Action is as new never completed into a firearm. There is also a very strong possibility that this is what we call a "Lunchbox Gun" which is a gun (or parts) that was removed surrepticiously during production or assembly. Lunchbox guns are legal to own as long as serial numbers have not been altered or removed. SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes |
