1863 Springfield and 1866 Springfield Assemblage
Description: Offered for sale is a historically significant assemblage that documents an important transition in the history of the American firearm and frontier warfare. The assemblage consists of: M1863 Springfield (Type II aka M1864), M1866 Springfield second Allin conversion, Civil War cartridge box, Indian Wars 1872 Hagner No. 1 cartridge box, and 1863 pattern bayonet with scabbard that fits both the 1863 and 1866 Springfield. After the Civil War the .58 caliber muzzle loading 1861 Springfield rifled muskets and variants (1863 and 1864) were converted to cartridge guns. Erskine Allin devised the “trapdoor” mechanism for the conversion. The first Allin conversion (1865) was chambered for a .58 caliber rim fire cartridge. The second Allin conversion (1866) used the .50-70 Government center fire cartridge. The introduction of the 1866 Springfield had significant impact with respect to the Indian Wars. The plains tribes had adapted their battle tactics to the muzzle-loading musket. They learned that after the first volley there was a delay while the musket was reloaded, which allowed a charge without much risk of being fired upon. Three battles along the Bozeman Trail in 1866 and1867 during Red Cloud’s War demonstrated the advantage the breech loading 1866 Springfield afforded the U.S. troops. Before the 1866 Springfield was issued a combined force of Great Plains tribes massacred troops using muzzle-loading muskets under the command of Captain William Fetterman. A few months later troops had been issued the 1866 Springfield. The rapidity of fire of this weapon, which surprised the much larger Indian force, enabled troops to survive the Wagon Box Fight and Hayfield Fight. The photos show the overall condition of the items in the assemblage. If you are seriously interested in this grouping that represents a significant transitional period in firearm development and frontier army battle tactics, please contact me for a detailed description and more photos of the items. The assemblage price is at a discount to the total price of the separate items; the assemblage will not be split up to sell individual items. Buyer pays the actual cost of shipping and insurance. Payment is by cashiers check or postal money order. Serious offers will be considered. SOLD Antique: Yes |
