Antique Springfield Armory Model 1861 Civil War Rifle-Musket
Historically Significant as Primary Infantry Weapon of Civil War
Here we present an antique Springfield Armory Model 1861 Civil War Rifle-Musket, made in 1862 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The M1861 is representative of the “everyman’s” rifle during the American Civil War. About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S., over 800,000 of which were made by the Springfield Armory. This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War.
This specimen is in good condition. Walnut stock shows the usual nicks and dings from lots of hard use, but is still very good for 150 years old. The two inspectors’ cartouches are still legible and are “ESA” for E.S. Allin and “WAT” for Captain William Anderson Thornton. Barrel and lock left in the white and still bright except for some light oxidation throughout. Metal parts in good condition. Lock dated “1862” and marked with “U.S./Springfield”. Bore is in good condition and the action is strong.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Caliber: .58 percussion
The bore is in good condition and the firing mechanism is functional.
