Springfield 1873 Trapdoor, .45-70 GOVT'
Description:
The 1873 "Trapdoor" Springfield was the first major Standard Issue breech loading rifle for the U.S. Army. The 1873 was the 5th variation of the Erskine S. Allin design.Springfield Armory sold surplus parts from early 1873 rifles and many buyers made up entire firearms and sold them in the civilian market. The rifle appearing here seems to be one of these rebuilt models, as the lockplate is stamped 1883 which is not a Springfield manufactured lock. The barrel is also a five groove whereas the standard issue 1873 had a three groove barrel. All said, this is still a historic piece and in good condition.
