Springfield Model 1880 Trapdoor Rifle Rare Rod Bayonet Rifle
Description:
Serial #155969, .45-70, 32 1/2" barrel with a dark, pitted bore.
This triangular ramrod bayonet-equipped rifle (the first such equipped Trapdoor in U.S. service) has an overall dark brown patina with moderate-heavy pitting evenly scattered about the metal.
The low-arch breech block has a matching patina with a correct, but loosely fitting latch-piece.
The triangular bayonet has a matching patina and pitting with a broken latch-piece (the latch is separated, but held in place by the bayonet itself).
The walnut stock was refinished long ago over numerous handling marks and blemishes.
The “SWP/1881" cartouche is
(rusted buttplate, 8/82 rack stamp, 40/26 pplate on comb)
