Springfield U.S. Model 1873 Experimental Trapdoor Carbine .45-70 Gov't
Description:
Springfield Model 1886 Experimental Trapdoor Carbine .45-70 Government. A very scarce antique firearm with only a mere 1,000 of these carbines manufactured. This specimen has a 24” round barrel with a rectangle base/pinned blade front sight and a 2,000 yard Buffington type rear sight, marked “XC” at the top. The breech block is marked “US / MODEL / 1873”, and the lock-plate is flat and marked “U.S. / Springfield” with an “American Eagle” in front of the hammer. The near full stock (original length) has a single barrel band, a bent/wraparound sling loop and lower swivel at the butt. The left wrist of the stock has a sling bar with ring. The metal butt-plate, marked “US” on top of the tang, has an accessory compartment with swivel door, which is empty. Also on the wrist of the left side of the stock is a “cartouche”, however only the lower half of the three letters on tope are showing, but the date, “1886”, at the bottom is quite readable. S#. 334100.CONDITION: Patina throughout best describes the metal, and the stock has numerous scratches and dings and gouging in the wood at the rear of the sling bar. The bore has some decent shine remaining but there is some light to moderate corrosion. Everything is in good working order and the rifle should prove to be a lot of fun to shoot.
