Springfield "Tanker" M1 Garand chambered in 7.62 Nato/.308 Winchester
SOLD
Description: For sale, a beautifully built "Tanker" M1 Garand chambered in .308 Winchester/7.62 NATO. This M1 Garand was made by Springfield and is serial number 3529973. It was originally chambered in 30-06 and was standard length. Sometime after WW2 and Korea, this Garand made it's way into the civilian market. In the 1960's several companies in the U.S. started selling surplus Garands and M1 Carbines and soon found there was a market for a shortened Garand that was nicknamed the "Tanker". Golden State Arms in California is one that comes to mind as one of the larger manufacturers of these Tankers. These Tanker Garand were primarily chambered in the original caliber 30-06, however there were some .308 Winchester Tankers sold as well. In 1957 with the U.S. Army adopting the M14 chambered in 7.62 NATO as their main battle rifle, the U.S. Navy was faced with the logistical ammo supply problem of having M1 Garand rifles in their inventory still chambered in 30-06. The Navy did not want the huge expense of scrapping their M1 Garands for the M14 and decided to rechamber their inventory to the .308/7.62 NATO round instead. This showed that the Garand could be rebarreled to work with the .308 Winchester cartridge and still work properly. This Tanker Garand has a LMR barrel that is dated 10/53 and is stamped ".308" below the date in larger numbers. This shows that this particular rifle was converted to .308 commercially rather than by the Navy. The Navy conversions were stamped "7.62 NATO" not ".308". See the close up picture included. This example does not have a spacer block installed in the internal magazine area like some we have seen in the past. That could be added if the new owner so chooses. The rifle is in excellent shape overall and is extremely attractive. The parkerizing looks excellent on all the metal parts and is a nice uniform color and texture. The walnut stock is also in excellent shape with no cracks, repairs, or damage. The bore is excellent with strong rifling and no pitting. This .308 Tanker comes with what appears to be an original leather military sling that is ink stamped "MRT 12-86". If it is a reproduction sling it would be one of the best I have ever seen with identical construction and materials as the originals made before WW1 onwards. Everything functions on this Garand 100% as it should. This is a really neat rifle and the next owner will have a lot of fun showing it off to others and shooting it!
