Description: NEAR MINT SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1879 TRAPDOOR .45-70 CAL. RIFLE CIRCA 1883 W/ SLING. All original and complete with all the correct parts for the late Model 1879 including the Model 1879 Rear Sight and the serrated trigger introduced in 1883. Serial in the 243,9xx range and with “SWP/1883” stock cartouche. 99% plus original blue and 95% plus case hardening. Stock with all the arsenal original oil finish and a mint cartouche. Mint bore. Excellent original sling. Stock stamped “DETROIT/BOARD/OF/COMMERCE” on the left butt and a 12 digit number preceded by the letter “P” hand etched on the trigger guard tang-probably a Detroit City property number . These were used to guard the waterways, port and harbor of the City of Detroit during WW! And were sold by the City after the war. Most of the Detroit Trapdoors were Model 1884’s which are more commonly encountered in this condition. The Model 1879 is much harder to find in near mint condition. SOLD Antique: Yes |
