VERY RARE METCALFE SPRINGFIELD
Description:
The Metcalfe part of this Springfield is the "Metcalfe Device" which was a cartridge holder on the side of a Trapdoor Springfield rifle. The device was a wooden cartridge block to carry extra ammunition. Built into the gun was the holder part. This Springfield has that. You rarely ever see those. This gun is a 1873 Trapdoor. 68k serial range. The idea was actually pretty good. They were issued with the pre-loaded blocks to carry on your belt. You would just exchange it on the rifle for a fresh one. Kind of like having an extra clip on the side of your gun. This turned out to be one of those good ideas that never took. The rifle itself is beautiful. Nearly all finish remains. An aging blue to the bbl. Still case colors on the receiver. Very nice markings on the side lock. Also a good cartouche on the left side. Wood is exceptional for being an early Trapdoor Springfield. This rifle was specifically made for the Metcalfe device. There is a lot of Springfields out there but very few like this!
