SPEC ORDER 28-Inch Barrel Antique Winchester 1873
Description:
SPEC ORDER 28-Inch Barrel Antique Winchester 1873
Made 1888 w Tooled Leather Scabbard in .32 WCF
Here we present an antique Winchester 1873 Third Model Lever Action Rifle in .32 WCF, made in 1888 in New Haven, Connecticut. The Model 1873 is one of the most iconic of American rifles. Given the moniker “The Gun that Won the West”, the 1873 was there during the Indian Wars and Range Wars of the late 19th century. Cowboys, Natives, settlers, miners, law enforcement, express companies and hunters all found these rifles and carbines useful tools. These rifles made excellent companions to revolvers at the time as they were chambered for the same ammunition, meaning that the user only had to keep one type to feed both guns. The 1873 really was the quintessential Western Frontier rifle, handily outpacing all the muzzle-loading and Civil War surplus guns that also made their way to the frontier.
This rifle sports a special order 28-inch barrel, while standard length was 4 inches shorter. Magazine tube is full length. The top of the barrel is marked “WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS NEW HAVEN CONN. USA/KINGS IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29, 1866, OCTOBER 16, 1860”. Breach end of the barrel is marked “.32 WCF”, and the brass lifter “.32 CAL”. Comes complete with a hand-tooled leather scabbard.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have been cleaned with a light gray patina developing. The markings are clear. The walnut stock shows signs of being used extensively, with period loss of slivers along the top of the forearm. There is a repair to the end of the magazine tube. The bore is well-rifled and clean. The action is strong. Here is a great example of a Special Order Winchester 1873 Rifle with a fantastic Hand-Tooled Leather Scabbard!
