Winchester 1873 early Third Model RARE 28" Letter
Description:
Winchester Model 1873 Sporting Rifle "Special Order" early Third Model with factory 28 inch Barrel .44-40wcf. The serial number of this example is 111005 placing date of manufacture in 1883. The Buffalo Bill Museum Letter that will accompany this rifle provides the following description at the time it was shipped: Type: Rifle, Barrel Type: Octagon, Barrel Length: 28 inch, Trigger: Plain, Received into the Warehouse on January 09, 1883, Shipped from the Warehouse: January 10, 1883, Order Number 35921. This is a very early third Model, there will be no caliber markings on the unpolished brass follower or Barrel because it is a .44-40wcf. Mostly a mix of blue and grey patina you will find remaining blue in protected areas of the receiver and Barrel. Crisp Barrel Address. The bore is near perfect with shine from breech to muzzle. I suspect early on this rifles bore may have been relined, not sure, if so the job is excellent and done by someone who was a Master Gunsmith! The action is tight, smooth and mechanically perfect. The wood to metal fit is perfect with numerous hits and dings expected for an old Ranch gun. No breaks, cracks or splinters observed. Any 1873 Winchester .44 with an "Extra Long Barrel" is considered very rare. Please phone Tommy at (760)-912-3761 or e-mail all questions and concerns. $35.00 shipping. Insurance will be additional.
