Winchester 1886 1 of 500 in 45-70
Description:
This is one of the 500 rifles built as modern-manufacture Model 1886 rifles. They have matte metalwork, 26" full octagonal barrels, full-length tube magazines, crescent steel buttplates, and buckhorn sights. They are marked 1 of 500 on the barrel, and are chambered in 45-70 caliber.
The 1886 was a massive and strong action when it was created, meant to handle the 45-70, 50-110 and other large cartridges used in Buffalo and big game hunting. Many of Winchester's earlier leverguns were chambered for pistol calibers, like 44-40, 38-40, 45 Long Colt, etc. With modern steel, this rifle is fully capable of firing the ultra-heavy custom 45-70 loads offered by Garrett, Buffalo Bore, Grizzly, and Cor-Bon. The ballistics of these rounds approach the power levels of the 458 Winchester Magnum. For Cowboy Action or everyday plinking, the old 405gr Remington load provides for low-recoil shooting, but yields more than enough power for Deer and Bear.
This rifle appears unfired in its original packaging, but some slight marks on the loading gate indicate that it was probably chambered and fired...perhaps at the factory, I'm not sure. .
