SOLD..Antique 1892 Winchester rifle in 38-40. Here is a nice and honest 1892 Winchester. S/N 154971 and made in 1897. Has the standard 24" round barrel. It is in the best shooting caliber 38-40.The bore on this rifle is EXCELLENT. Bright bore all the way through with excellent sharp rifling and NO roughness at all. Absolutely NO pitting what so ever. NO rings or bulges...Getting very hard to find any antique rifle with a bore this nice. The mechanics are excellent in feeding , firing and ejecting with no backed out primers or bulged cases and this gun shoots as good as the day it was made period !!! The metal is a smooth medium gray with no pitting anywhere. The markings are excellent.. I think the front sight is original Lyman bead type but the brass bead is missing. Could be a period replacement but it is absolutely very old sight. Original rear sight with flat top with the original later type elevator. Both hammer notches are perfect. The screw heads are sharp and not all burred up from tinkering. The wood is just good on this gun. The forearm still fits tight and proud to the metal. Has a small goudge on the front left side right behind the end cap. It also looks like it had some sort of a plate or plaque attached to on the bottom of forearm right in front of the receiver{see photo}.. It is absolutely not a repair of any kind as I looked with a loop and you can see all the original wood grain were the plaque was. NO filler or any repairs at all. The butt stock fits tight to the metal with a small sliver out on the top by upper tang on both sides. {see photo}. Has the normal and honest bumps, dings and scratches that you would find on a honest used rifle of the day. All in all the wood is not that bad and with a little repairing if so desired, would make for a better looking set of wood. It is what it is !!! Nothing special here but a very honest used antique 1892 Winchester that is getting harder to find in the antique S/N range. I would have this one priced around the $1400 range but with the bore being excellent it is a bit higher but still very reasonable. If you are a shooter / collector and fan of the 38-40 like I am, you will love this one. Very hard to improve on the bore. It would have to be a new, mint bore to top this one and good luck on finding that one !!! Don't miss this one. Please take a look at my other antique firearms while you are here by clicking on the link to see all Toms guns. I have a couple more antique 92's that are in the same price range but not with this nice a bore. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. I want happy customers. $50 insured shipping.
