Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Historic & Important Deluxe Grade Hollis Brothers & Co. Percussion Double Barrel Shotgun, Retailed by Spang & Wallace, Philadelphia, Presented to Hibernia Guards Captain Frederick Mullin by the Patterson Guards for Service During the Philadelphia Nativist Riots of 1844, 11 Ga, mfg. 1845. This is a fantastic piece of history that remains in excellent original condition. The Philadelphia Nativist Riots took place between May 6-8th and July 6th & 7th, 1844 and left numerous buildings (including several Catholic churches) burned to the ground with scores dead and wounded. The riots were the culmination to months of anti-Catholic propaganda put forth by nativist groups in the area. Local guard and militia units were finally called in to put an end to the riots. This shotgun was presented by the leading military unit that took place in the riots, the Philadelphia Patterson Guards, to Captain Frederick Mullin (often spelled "Mullen"), who's Hibernia Guards held several positions throughout the city and were specificaly instructed to "repel with force any attempt to assail his corps or to injure public or private property". The gun was manufactured in England by Hollis Brothers & Co. and retailed in Philadelphia by noted gun makers Spang & Wallace. Hollis had a long run of manufacturing guns but only used the name "Hollis Brothers & Co" between 1845-1848, which coinciding with the inscription on this gun would put it's date of manufacture to the year it was presented; 1845. The Damascus barrels measure 30" long and feature a small brass post front sight with a v-notched brass rear sight. The breech is Platinum banded and the upper rib is engraved "LONDON FINE TWIST" flanked by elaborate scrollwork. Additionally the rib is inscribed "SPANG & WALLACE PHILADa". The locks and furniture are profusely engraved. Both locks are marked "Hollis Brothers & Co" and feature sculpted dolphin head hammers. The barrels retain 85% vivid original Damascus pattern while the locks and furniture show a plum/gray patina. The stock features a finely checkered wrist and shows an untouched, original appearance. A thin coat of varnish has been added long ago. Aside from a couple expertly period repaired 1" cracks under the forestock which are hardly worth noting, the wood is sound with no additional cracks, chips, or repairs. The name "T. CONNELLY" is stamped twice on the left side of the buttstock and once on the right. I have not identified this mark, though it could be that of a previous owner or perhaps the gun was stocked in Philadelphia by Spang & Wallance and Connelly was the gunsmith. A 3 3/16" x 2" inscribed Silver plaque is inlaid into the right side of the buttstock which reads: "Presented by the / Volunteer Company of / PATTERSON GUARDS / To their late Captain / FREDERICK MULLIN / as a token of Respect / Phila April 21st 1845". The stock is also fitted with an engraved Nickel Silver nipple compartment, nameplate escutcheon, and wedge escutcheons. Engraved buttplate and triggerguard, with original ramrod pipes and horn tipped wood ramrod. Both actions are crisp and function flawlessly, though the hammers are very loose on the tumblers for some reason. Both nipples are clean originals with period leather protectors. A truly impressive and historically significant shotgun that will be a highlight in any antique arms collection. Really a museum piece. No FFL required on pre-1899 firearms.
