Henry Atkin (From Purdey's) 12 bore Sidelock Ejector Gun with Sidelever
Description: SOLD *** JUST IN FROM THE UK *** As the top rib and action engraving of this gun proclaims, the Henry Atkin who built this gun did his apprenticeship at Purdey's under his father, also named Henry, who is said to have been James Purdey's first employee. There is no doubt that he learnt his trade well as all guns produced under his name are truly gorgeous, this Gun, no. 573, being no exception. Made for the Marquess of Winchester circa 1890. Number 1 of a pair. *** The action body is stamped 'JR' so we can say for sure that this gun was the product of John Robertson's Soho workshop (of Boss & Co fame). Although made as an ejector, the Southgate system featured seems to be a later improvement, maybe replacing an unreliable, earlier design and incorporated a new forend iron as well as modifications to the cocking levers. Recently refurbished in the UK by Toby Barclay of Heritage Guns. When this gun came to us, its chopper lump barrels were very thin and pitted so we have TIG sleeved them to their original 30". However, what is really interesting is the lockwork. Originally stamped Stanton, they have been over-stamped Brazier and many of the bridle and spring pin holes have been bushed and re-drilled. The locks are of fabulous quality and incorporate a possibly unique and experimental interceptor sear that without any extra moving parts, blocks the main sear as well as the tumblers. All these wonderful features combine with the rounded action and sidelever opening to make a very safe and desirable gun for either game or clays. *** The Action is of normal late C19th design and features: Sidelever operating a double bite Purdey Bolt; double triggers bolted by an automatic, top tang, safety slide; unique interceptor sears based on the late H&H style; bar action sidelocks by Brazier; Southgate ejectors and an Anson forend catch.Gun weighs 6lb 13oz. Engraving style Very best 'Rose and Scroll'. Gold inlaid 'SAFE' and '1' on top rib and top tang. Beaded Fences. Rounded action. Under action bar engraved 'PATENT H. ATKIN'S EJECTOR'. Trigger pulls measure approximately: Front trigger 3 ½ lbs Rear trigger 4 lbs. *** The TIG sleeved, Whitworth Fluid Steel barrels are 30" in length, chambered for 2 ¾ " (70mm) cartridges and are of chopper lump construction with soft soldered ribs. Top rib is of the smooth, concave, game style. Birmingham reproof for 70mm nitro powder cartridges in 2015. The right barrel is bored 0.727 and has a constriction of 0.010 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.033. The left barrel has a bore diameter of 0.729 with a constriction of 0.020 for Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.031. *** The replacement, straight hand stock and splinter forend are crafted from well figured walnut. The stock is lightly cast-off for a right-handed Gun. It features a gold oval engraved with a coat of arms, well-defined drop points and is finished with a 1" leather recoil pad. The forend has two wood inlet repairs to its forward edges and is fitted with a finely engraved steel tip and diamond. The 24 approximate lines per inch checkering has been freshened to the original pattern. The stock is finished with a traditional linseed oil based preparation as used on best guns by one of the top English makers. This finish uses no grain fillers to achieve its deep, smooth lustre, only many hours of alternate build and flatting off of the surface. The stock dimensions are 14-1/2” by 1-1/2” by 2-1/4”. Cast off for right hand shot. *** US Agent for Heritage Guns UK. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance and related charges. I give a three-day non-firing inspection and will only accept returns if gun is not as described. Always use sensible low pressure ammunition such as RST shotshells in older and antique shotguns. This is a really nice high grade small bore Holland perfectly suited for upland game or clays. Won’t last long. SOLD Antique: Yes |
