L.C. Smith 20 Gauge, Field Grade, 28” Barrels, Exceptional Wood, Mfg 1948
Description: This LC Smith Field Grade 20 gauge shotgun was manufactured in 1948 and is thus one of the last LC Smith shotguns ever produced. This may account for the unusually fine wood, which is typical of that found on Ideal Grade guns. As production was winding down, it would have made sense for the gun makers to select the best of the remaining stock blanks. Ninety-five percent plus of the action retains original color from case-hardening, which has faded with time. The exterior of the barrels is flawless as refinished using the slow rust blue process; the lettering on the top of the right barrel is crisp; and the bores are excellent. The stock, which has been properly refreshed, is without cracks and is solid at the interface of the action, often a problem with vintage LC Smiths and other side locks. This classic gun has 2-3/4” chambers, and the 28” fluid steel barrels are choked Improved Cylinder (.007) and Improved Modified (.020). The wall thickness (top/side/bottom) for the right barrel at 9” from muzzle is .047/.049/.043 and at the middle of the barrel is .040/.040/.040; the left barrel is .043/.043/.044 and .039/.038/.039, respectively. Bores 9” from the breech are both.615. Outside diameters of the barrels at the muzzle are .700 and .695, respectively. A Feather Weight model, it weighs 6 lb 8 oz. The drop at the comb is 1-1/2” and at the heel 2-1/2”. Length of pull is 14” from the front trigger to the end of the original butt plate. The gun locks up tight and on face; the top lever returns to the right of center. All serial numbers, S 31553, match. The inspection period is 7 days from receipt by buyer. This shotgun has been fired using factory 2-3/4” target loads. However, as for any vintage shotgun, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by a professional gunsmith before firing. The gun carries a 30-day warrantee, during which Back in Time will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the gun and refund the price of the gun and the return shipping cost. The listed price does not include shipping costs paid by the buyer.
