DAN’L FRASER & CO, Nos. 2029
Description: SH1 Exceptionally rare, possibly unique, true matched pair of factory-cased boxlock ejector 12-bore heavy game guns by DAN’L FRASER & CO, Nos. 2029 & 2030 for 1893. 2 ¾” chambers, 30” dovetailed steel barrels. This exceptionally fine pair of guns exude the style and quality for which the maker was renowned for in the late 19th Century. The nicely struck barrels are fitted with file cut, concave game ribs engraved Barrels Manufactured By Dan’l Fraser & Co. 4 Leith Street Terrace Edinburgh flanked by pyramids of fine scroll engraving, with matching engraving at the breech ends. The muzzles are separated, a feature often seen on Fraser double rifles. The serial-numbered steel barrels show post-1888 London black powder proofs. The case-hardened boxlock actions feature dolls head extensions with pivoting bolt third fasteners, bushed strikers, intercepting sears, double triggers and automatic safeties. The word SAFE appears on a gold band with a black enamel background, and a red enamel dot shows when the safety slide is in the fire position. The actions are engraved with a complete coverage of beautifully cut, fully shaded small scroll engraving with Dan’l Fraser & Co. in ribands on each action bar. The fences are carved with raised bead borders and deeply chiseled scroll-flanked fleur-di-lis with scroll-engraved backgrounds. The top levers are engraved Frasers Patent and numbered 1 and 2; these gun numbers are repeated on the barrel breeches and are pressed into the forend wood in the barrel channels. The charcoal-blued trigger guards are scroll-engraved and carry the gun serial numbers on their bows. Gun number 1 is stocked with nicely marbled and stump/burl figured walnut; the stock on Gun Number 2 shows fiddle figuring with dark veining. Both stocks have long horn-capped pistol-grips and measure 14 1/2” over point-pattern chequered horn buttplates. The stocks have point-pattern chequering at the wrist and feature chequered side panels terminating in nicely-shaped drop points. The gold escutcheons on the stocks are engraved with HCP in monogram for Henry Clay Pierce, the first owner of the guns and a well-known oil baron in the late 19th Century. The matching splinter forends have Anson releases. The barrels retain nearly all of an old high quality reblack, and the engraving remains sharp. The actions retain 70 – 80% of their original case-hardening colour. The floorplates, top levers and trigger guards retain most original charcoal blue. The stocks retain retain nearly all of their original hand-rubbed oil finish. Bores are excellent, bright and shiny throughout. Actions are tight and barrels are on the face and ejectors are in time. One case strap is missing and the handle is a later replacement. The interior cloth of the case is in good condition, with areas of soiling and scuffing from contact with the guns and accessories. Accessories are very fine to excellent, especially the capper-decapper, which is nearly new. PROVENANCE: This fabulously rare pair of guns were finished Ca. 1893 for Henry Clay Pierce of St Louis in Missouri, oil baron and one of the four richest men in the USA in the late 19th Century. Pierce founded the Waters-Pierce oil company. The Waters-Pierce oil company was acquired by John D Rockefeller’s Standard Oil in 1896 following the successful prosecution of the company and Pierce by the State of Texas for violation of anti-trust laws. Pierce was briefly incarcerated in Texas for lying under oath in the trial and fined heavily. Perhaps he only got to enjoy these magnificent Daniel Fraser guns for a few brief years in the 1890’s? A truly magnificent and very rare pair of guns, perfect for the Vintager after high pheasants! Sent from my iPad SOLD |
