J.P.CLABROUGH & BROS. DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN
Description: This would seem to be a 10 gauge double barrel but 11 is underneath each barrel among the proof marks.John Clabrough started a gun store in San Francisco in 1870 ,or so, and after a few years also had a store in Birmingham, England. With a low serial number of 2204 on this shotgun, there is a good chance it was sold out of San Franciso. In California Gunsmiths by Lawrence P. Sheldon on pages 58-60 shows some of the double barrel shotguns made for the California market. This old shotgun is almost all there. Both locks work okay, wood is solid, screws are nice, and barrels are not badly pitted for its age. A honing of barrels should make them look pretty good.Ribs are solid. There is some rust that needs to be cleaned off the outside of barrels.Forend catch needs to be refastened. Right side hammer ( with screw ) and same side firing pin are missing. And lock-up is a bit loose ,or, I think its called off face. There are some cracks in wrist but wood seems solid.Since its Birmingham black bpowdered proofed, it falls into the antique era.
