Purdey 16 ga Shotgun Nitro Proofed
Description: Here is a nice Purdey 16 ga side x side shot gun I bought in Madrid in 2004. The gun was purchased from Fernando Duran (kind of the Sotheby's of Spain). I have spoken with Purdey and verified that the gun in Nitro Proofed and that it was original sold into Italy. It is in the books with Purdey as follows: 16 bore Purdey best quality double barrel hammerless self opening non ejector gun Completed in May 1884 for Duke of Alba (one of the most influential families of Europe, and also Duke of Berwick in UK) 30" barrels made of Whitworth steel. Third grip to action. Original stock length 14 1/16" mid. Original weight of gun 5lb 15 1/2oz. I have to measure the stock. My theory is that this gun was for the Dutchess of Alba, and in the 1930's or 40's someone bought it and restocked it for a man. The stock is actually not bad it just has the most miserable varnish on it. Stripped off and oiled it would be pretty good. The engraving and reciever is in good to VG condition 8.5/10 The barrels were re-blued at some time in the past, I have no idea when but are currently in 7.5/10 condition but show signs of the age in minor dings which the rebluing covered over. The interior barrels have minimal pitting and are in good condition. 7/10 The forearm is original and is in 8.5/10 condition or better. The stock is not original to my eye, my guess is that it was restocked 30-40 years ago as the stock shows age and use and is certainly restorable but it was finished with a varnish not an oil and has to be stripped and refinished. Stock is physically sound 9/10, cosmetically a 4/10 It is light weight and a nice shotgun with good engraving. The issue with the gun is that the previous owner broke the internal hammers - do not ask me how as it seems kind of impossible to me but they did it - they then tried a really poor welding job on them which would make any gun lover cringe. The solution is either a) Get the part from Purdey or b) you can just image the part with a camera and get a replacement made by titanium sintellation (basically 3d printing of metal) which is available online at a cost of about $900, or C) modify other hammers. It is not in this day and age an overly complicated repair but you know life is short and I have no time for another project right now. I am going to offer it and if it doesn't sell I will fix and and then use it or sell it. If you want a good gun at a great price this is it. My take is that the gun is worth about $17,000+ repaired and with the stock cleaned up. I am sure someone will give it a good home and use it for decades to come. It is priced fairly and to sell. If you buy it for the full up price I will throw in an amazing walnut burl stock blank I got for the gun. Its not a "good" blank its an f'ing amazing burl blank worth $1000+ You stick that on this gun and it will be jaw dropping. I would like to see it that way. I am sure you would too. I am not a dealer this came from my personal collection.
