William R. Schaefer & Son (Boston)
Description: William R. Schaefer was established in 1853. His business became William R. Schaefer & Son in 1885. He was a retailer for various makes including the renowned Prussian Charles Daly. He was said to have made his own guns as well. My guess that he imported most of his guns from Europe and England. What is known is that Schaefer Guns are rare and of extremely high quality. the majority of his guns had little or no engraving. Being that his shop was located near the then thriving waterfowl waters of Chesapeake bay, he mostly produced big bore guns. This 8 bore has several unique features that I have not seen on other high quality single barrel "fowlers" Among these are "dual" deeply carved percussion-style fences. Bar action sidelocks, including a full sideplate on the left side.,and a "dummy" striker on the left side. The massively thick bbl is made of the finest "Rose" Damascus (the barrel alone weighs 6 pounds & 6 ounces) The walls at the breech are "engine-turned" and are almost one half inch thick! The stock is highly figured american walnut with the original Horn buttplate. It appears that the stock once had an adjustable comb that has been changed to a fixed comb. These changes are beautifully done and no doubt was done by Schaefer himself at or near the time the gun was made. Condition: This gun is in outstanding original condition. It has 98% of the original pattern and 95% of the original "black & white" browning. The parts that were blued retain 99 %. Case coloring is all there but is fading, especially on the action body. The wood retains the majority of its original finish, there are minor handling marks simply due to the gun being over 130 years old. The ckeckering is near perfect. The bore is near perfect, bright and shiny and no pits. The barrel length is 34 inches. I firmly believe this is a "one of a kind" gun. I have shot this gun with Smokeless Gamebore shells. It will literally dust clays, I wonder what it would do on Wild Turkey? (Price reduced to $2950. Please call with you r questions. Shipping by Fed Ex.
