Westley Richards 28 bore Box Lock Ejector with 30” Barrels
Description: *** SOLD *** Produced in 1910 during the heyday of the English hammerless shotgun, this Westley Richards 28 bore is a well-finished and specified example of the Anson & Deeley boxlock that became such a hugely successful design for Westley Richards. Recently refurbished by Toby Barclay of Heritage Guns UK. Built originally as a 20g, the barrels were beyond saving when it came to us so we had the gun sleeved using 30" 28 gauge tubes. With its excellent barrel measurements and sensitive restoration, it is a very safe, pretty and 'shootable' gun for either game or clays. *** The action, number D9546, is of Anson & Deeley design and features: scroll-back action body; double triggers bolted by an automatic top tang safety slide; broad Westley Richards style top lever operating a 'Purdey Bolt' and 'Doll's Head' extension bolt; 'Deeley' ejectors tripped by slides running from the action knuckle to the main springs, 'Deeley' forend catch. Gun weighs 5lb 14oz. Engraving style Border and Scroll. Yellow metal SAFE. Signed action. Trigger pulls measure approximately: Front trigger 3 lbs Rear trigger 4 ½ lbs. *** The TIG sleeved steel barrels are 30" in length, chambered for 2 ¾" (70mm) cartridges and are of brazed 'dovetail' lump construction with soft soldered ribs. Top rib is of the smooth, concave, game type. London proof for 70mm nitro powder cartridges in 2012. The right barrel is bored 0.553 with a choke constriction of 0.037 for Extra Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.025. The left barrel is also bored 0.553 with a constriction of 0.035 for Extra Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.025. *** The straight hand stock and splinter forend are crafted from well figured walnut. The stock is cast off for a right-handed shot, features a white metal escutcheon engraved with a faint 'WS' and is finished with an ebonite butt plate secured with engraved screws. There is an oval inlet to the front of the comb, probably a “shake” in the original wood. The forend is fitted with a horn tip. *** The 24 lines per inch checkering is to the normal boxlock design with well defined drop points. The stock is finished with a traditional linseed oil based preparation as used on best guns by one of the top English makers. This finish uses no grain fillers to achieve its deep, smooth lustre, only many hours of alternate build and flatting off of the surface. The stock dimensions are 14-9/16” by 1-1/2” by 2-1/4”. Cast off for right handed shooter. *** You won’t find many English 28 bores with 30” barrels and a long stock available. This would make a great gun for clays or upland game. Won’t last long! US Agent for Heritage Guns UK. *** This is a modern firearm and I will need a copy of your dealer’s FFL. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance and related charges. I give a three-day non-firing inspection and will only accept returns if gun is not as described. SOLD |
