Winchester Model 42 - RARE DELUXE STAMPED
SOLID RIB, FACTORY 99%
Description: Winchester Model 42 Pump .410 Gauge Shotgun RARE DELUXE STAMPED, SOLID RIB, FACTORY 99% General Specs: Winchester, Year 1949, .410 Gauge, 6lbs 7oz, Pump action Serial Number: 80777 The Model 42 is an icon in the ranks of Winchester firearms, made in the days of the highest quality control and hand fitted parts. The Model 42 was a flawlessly produced little pump gun, chambered only for the diminutive .410 shotgun shell. In the 30 years of production that ran from 1933 to 1963, almost 160,000 of these fine guns were produced. A very large percentage were Field Grade guns, and there were also Skeet Grades, Trap Grades, and the Deluxe Grade. IN ALL THERE WERE LESS THAN 400 DELUXE GRADES EVER MADE BY THE FACTORY. In Ned Schwing's book "THE WINCHESTER MODEL 42" he describes the Deluxe Grade as a continuation of the Trap Grade that was in production from 1934 to 1939 with only 231 guns produced. In 1946 the Deluxe Grade took the place of the Trap Grade with the same distinguishing features, namely the jeweled bolt and carrier, XXX wood, double diamond 20 line per inch checkered forend, single diamond checkered stock, and on a very few of the Deluxe guns a stamping on the receiver below the serial number declaring the gun a "DELUXE". Schwing notes that this stamping ceased in 1949 and very few Deluxe Grades built between 1946 and 1949 ever actually received this stamp. And here in lies the rub when evaluating low production, desirable, higher grade Model 42's---there are a lot of fakes, far more than were ever produced by the factory. To determine originality you must study the sum of the parts and look at the gun very closely with an educated eye. This gun, serial number 8077 built in 1949 is one of the rare ORIGINAL, FACTORY DELUXE GRADES. The metal finishes are all factory original and at 99% overall. The stampings on the bottom of the receiver are deep, consistent, factory applied and a perfect match to the example provided by Schwing in his definitive book on the Model 42. The wood and checkering are factory original. We have here a bona fide Deluxe Grade Model 42 in near mint condition. Even the jewelling on the bolt and carrier match the book exactly. The Deluxe Model 42 in high original condition is a fun little gun to shoot and collect and will continue to grow in value as you enjoy its use, especially in this high, factory original condition.
