C.S. Pettengill Army Model Revolver (U.S. Marked)
Description: Serial #3003, .44 Caliber, 7 1/2? octagon barrel with a very good, bright bore that has some mild freckling within the grooves. This is a rare revolver that has a correct but mismatched cylinder and retains some traces of the original blue with the balance turned to a cleaned, streaky pewter gray patina mixing with even, dark freckling. The frame has a few scattered spots of mild pinprick pitting, mostly on the rear of the frame and on the rear portion of the cylinder. The topstrap markings are still clear but some of the letters and numerals appear to have been lightly re-scribed at some point in the revolver's life. The walnut grips are numbered to a different gun on the interior and have numerous light-moderate handling marks and blemishes on both panels with a small chip missing from the heel of the left panel. The U.S. inspector cartouche is just visible on the left side. The mechanism, unusually, is currently functional but due to the notorious fragility of the components, it is not recommended that it be cycled very much if at all. These are quite rare revolvers with only a handful surviving to the present day. This example is in very good condition and would make a fine addition to a collection.
