Here we present an antique Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine, made in 1883 in New Haven, Connecticut. Known as the Yellowboy, due to its brass frame and hardware, this was the first Winchester lever action rifle. It remains absolutely iconic as the “gun that won the West”, being used by pioneers, Native Americans, cowboys, lawmen, and ne'er-do-wells alike. It is the cornerstone for many a historical collection. It was revolutionary for its time, though it was based on the Henry Rifle that saw limited use during the American Civil War. Winchester improved upon the weaknesses of that design to make a very reliable, sturdy, and accurate rifle with a high volume of fire. The magazine tube became totally enclosed from the elements and the frame-mounted loading gate was introduced, allowing quick reloads and the ability to top off the magazine.
This saddle ring carbine would have been very handy for use on the back of a horse with its short overall length, ease of operation and large magazine capacity. It features some very simple wilderness themed engravings of a bison, sheep, stag, ram, and squirrel, along with oak leaves and acorns. Unlike most of its rimfire brethren, this carbine is chambered for .44 centerfire. This rifle appears well-used and well-loved.
The overall condition is good. The barrel has a light coat of old oil that has turned dark. The brass has an even patina. The original factory legend has worn off the barrel. The serial number and engravings are clear. Both barrel bands have been secured with a nail. The walnut stock shows wear but remains solid. The lower tang screw is absent. The bore is fair with good rifling. The action is excellent and crisp. Here is a unique and very affordable example of an Engraved Winchester 1866 Yellowboy Carbine!
