Cased Deane, Adams, & Deane Model 1851 Double-Action Percussion Revolver in .44 Caliber
** Spectacular Original Condition! **
Description: This has to be one of the cleanest all-original Deane, Adams, & Deane Model 1851 Double-Action .44 Caliber Percussion Revolvers in existence. This work of functional art comes complete with it's original English Oak presentation case with a green baize lining and the Deane, Adams, & Deane maker's label in the lid. The presentation case contains all of the original accessories including a James Dixon & Sons (Sheffield, England) powder flask, an Adams Registered Nov.1851 2-cavity bullet/round ball mold, an Ebony wood-handled combination nipple wrench and oiler, a patch cutter, a wooden handled cleaning rod/rammer with 2 screw-on tips, a Dixon & Sons oil bottle, a full bag of period Eley Metal-lined percussion caps, 5 extra nipples, and assorted round ball and conical bullets. The Deane, Adams, & Deane Model 1851 is a double-action only percussion revolver, manufactured during a period in which the vast majority of revolvers were single-action only. The double action design allowed this Model 1851 to fire rapidly and accurately, quite an advantage over other designs. It proved to be an excellent weapon that was both very well-made and reliable, and was usually owned by gentlemen of means due to it's high cost. This Model 1851 features a spectacular factory high-polish gloss blue finish on the frame and barrel, a bright fire-blue finish on the trigger and external bar springs, and a beautiful color case-hardened finish on the cylinder. The spur-less hammer is factory hand-polished bright, and the grip is a 1-piece hand-checkered European Walnut with a blued steel grip cap. The barrel on this Model 1851 is 6 & 5/8ths" inches long and octagon in shape, and the cylinder is a 5-shot unfluted design. The sights on this Deane, Adams, & Deane revolver consist of a dovetailed-in front blade with a bead, while the rear sight consists of a integral notched ridge machined into the topstrap of the frame. While the left side of the frame has a relief cut beside the cylinder pin for loading the cylinder while in the gun, the most common way to load this revolver would have been to remove the cylinder to load it. The cylinder can be removed quickly without the need for any tools, you simply pull the cylinder pin firmly forward and the cylinder comes out. The cylinder pin is help in place under spring tension with a detent, a secure method that prevents the cylinder pin from coming out at an inopportune time. Once fully loaded, the cylinder can be put back into the gun and carried safely by means of a bar-spring hammer safety mounted on the left side of the gun. To engage it, the trigger is pulled slightly to start the rearward motion of the hammer while the top of the bar-spring is pushed in until it clears the hammer, at that point the the trigger is released and the hammer is left safely resting on the bar-spring, blocked from making contact with the percussion cap. To fire, the trigger is simply pulled and the bar-spring pops out of the way as soon as the tension is released by the hammer moving. This was a rather ingenious feature of this revolver, while many other revolver designs required the hammer to be rested on a unloaded chamber to be safe, the Model 1851 could be kept fully-loaded and ready for action without any extra steps. As mentioned earlier, the condition of this revolver is excellent, both inside and out. The factory finishes are all still bright and handsome, showing only very minimal wear/age/handling marks and no bad spots or eyesores. The factory high-polish blue has a mirror-like slick finish, and the case colors on the cylinder still show a nice mix of bright colors. All of the hand engraved factory markings (rather than stamped) and proofs are crisp and clear, and all of the serial numbered parts are matching. The bore in this Model 1851 is immaculate! The rifling still looks sharp and crisp and the bore is mirror-bright without any visible imperfections. The 5 chambers in the cylinder are equally as pristine. The original European Walnut checkered grip is in excellent condition, showing no cracks, chips, repairs, or major dings/damage. The checkering is still crisp and clean. The action on this Deane, Adams, & Deane revolver is exceptionally smooth and perfectly "in time", and all of the controls are in perfect working order. There is no doubt that this Model 1851 would function just as reliably and accurately today as the day it left the factory over 160 years ago! If you have been looking for an investment-grade cased antique revolver for your collection that could also be a superb display piece in your home, this Deane, Adams, & Deane would be an excellent choice. It would be all but impossible to upgrade from this spectacular piece.
