This horn is 19" overall with a cork butt 3 1/2". The horn is of a size that would indicate its use as a supply horn. The horn bears the name John Hardel dated 1851. This piece shows a great patina and color. The carver showed various scenes including house with a woman waiting, seal, sailing ship, mermaid, various birds, various fish and animals and an interpretation of a sea-horse. This piece is in above average condition with a great eye-appeal. The original plug is with this piece. This piece suggests the use aboard an offshore sealer or possibly a crew member of a whaler. The name HOKE is also carved on the piece. This is an excellent plus display horn, original and with a wonderful aged patina.
