Civil War Unit Marked Prussian Model 1809 Percussion Musket
Description: NSN, .72 Caliber, 41" barrel with a fair, pitted bore. This is a German musket, imported at the start of the Civil War to arm the large number of volunteer regiments. The barrel has an overall mottled brown patina with some mild pitting at the muzzle, and heavier pitting at the breech and nipple bolster. The “Neisse" marked lock and hammer have a mottled, gray-brown patina with some further surface pitting on the leading edge of the hammer neck. The barrel bands have a dull ochre patina on the brass, while the nosecap has a more ruddy brown color. The beech stock is original, and has numerous small handling marks and blemishes throughout, including a some with-the-grain cracks on the forearm just behind the nosecap on the left side, at the rear lockplate screw head, and at the toe of the butt on the right side. The top of the comb is stamped with a Federal regiment identifier: “73 Co. E. 51 St. / Ill." The 51st Illinois was organized on Christmas Eve, 1861, and was initially issued “Austrian rifles" (actually Prussian Model 1809 muskets) upon its formation. Regimental inventories list 457 arms in hand, with 403 in use on December 3, 1862. They saw service with the regiment at Island No. 10, Farmington, Stones River, and the march to Nashville. This is a very good, unit identified, Civil War foreign purchase musket. Antique SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: German Model: Potsdam Caliber Info: .72 Gauge Info: .72 |
