This is an 1863 dated sword that measures 34 1/2" overall, with a 28 1/8" straight, single-edged blade with wide, single fullers. The blade is excellent, with only some residual freckling at the ricasso (from contact with the intact fabric lining of the scabbard throat). The balance of the blade has bright, original patina, and crisp markings at the ricasso: “U.S. / 1863 / F.S.S." on the obverse; “C. ROBY / W. CHELMSFORD MASS. (in circle)" on the reverse. The brass hilt has a mild tarnish with crisp “F.S.S." inspector stamp on the knucklebow. The scabbard is also in excellent shape with undented brass throat and chape, as well as intact black leather. This sword is about as nice an example of a Roby 1840 Musician's Sword as one is going to find, and rates excellent, almost unissued condition.
