“OLD WRISTBREAKER” Civil War 1840 CAVALRY SABER
Description: “OLD WRISTBREAKER” Civil War 1840 CAVALRY SABER American HEAVY CAVALRY Sword Based on FRENCH Sabre Here we present an antique US Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber, nicknamed “Old Wristbreaker”, made circa 1860. The Model 1840 was the second cavalry saber adopted by the U.S. after the M1833. The M1840 actually reached back further to the French M1822 for its inspiration. It was heavy and made for slashing during the cavalry charge with its swept back blade shape. Its moniker, “Old Wristbreaker”, was quite fitting. It served through the Mexican American War, and even though a new blade was adopted in the Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber, the M1840 saw fighting from both the Union and Confederate points of view. This one was made in Solingen by Kirschbaum, then imported into the US. The only marking on this saber is the maker’s mark, a knight’s head. This indicates that it was not purchased by the federal government. Ring mounts are bronze and show casting marks. Further, the scabbard has been quite roughly joined at the seam, the type of crude handiwork that one sees with Confederate blades of the time. The overall condition is good. The 36-inch blade is in good shape, it has a smooth, light gray patina. The hilt is in good shape, showing appropriate wear for the age. The leather on the grip is whole and tight. The wire is abbreviated. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $1275 #6626.1 SOLD |
