There isn't a collector, enthusiast, nor historian alive who doesn't know just how desperate the South was in equipping its forces. Among the many such examples, we have here a a rare specimen, likely a piece of Confederate ingenuity.
The already Rare and desirable Ames-produced Model 1840 "Heavy Cavalry Saber", being dated 1848, bears the legible markings for an Ames-produced sword ("US" with martial inspector's initials on the ricasso, with the Ames address and production date, then the other two distinct martial inspector initials upon the top of the pommel). Being already 13 years old when war broke-out (and the Model 1840 saber was the most widely used of the Confederacy, since they were already in production since 1840, and filled within Southern state arsenals and militias).
It has a 25-inch blade and 31.25" total length. It also has a hand-wrought copper knuckle bow with copper rivets attaching it to the original bow. Nothing has been repaired, and it's 100% as it was found out of an old house on the Kentucky-Tennessee line.
