WW2 Early Production German 1st Model Luftwaffe Dagger by Paul Weyersberg Solingen SOLD
Description: This is a very cool all-original and un-molested 1st Model Luftwaffe Dagger brought home as a war trophy from Nazi Germany in WW2. This dagger has been in storage for several decades with the family of the veteran that brought it home. It has been wiped off and lightly oiled only, with the leather on the handle and scabbard getting a light coating of conditioner, otherwise it has not been cleaned, polished or "improved" in any way. The 1st Model Luftwaffe Dagger design was adopted by the German Luftwaffe in late 1934 and were issued to officers and pilots of the German air force. They were produced by numerous companies in Nazi Germany and took the form of a modified version of the earlier DLV dagger although slightly shorter with an average length of 18.5" inches. The early production daggers and scabbards feature all nickel silver fittings with the dagger grip and scabbard covered in dark blue leather. The grip features a spiral twist running diagonally from top left to bottom right. The sunwheel swastika was utilized as theanizational insignia appearing on both sides of the pommel and center crossguard. The swastika was was formed with brass inlays on both pieces. The blade of the 1st Model Luftwaffe dagger is a double edge stilleto with a blue leather buffer washer at the base. The blade was etched with the maker's logo up near the crossguard, the only marked part of the dagger. Later production 1st Model Luftwaffe daggers were made with aluminum pommels and crossguards rather than the nickel steel fittings. This was seen as a step to "modernize" the dagger as many of the planes and equipment that the Luftwaffe used were made of an aluminum alloy. The scabbard of the 1st Model Luftwaffe dagger features three seperate fittings, each held in place with small flathead counter-sunk screws. The top two fittings have an interlocking chain suspension hanger with a spring loaded catch for hanging on the service belt. As mentioned earlier, the scabbard body is covered in dark blue leather between each of the fittings. This particular Paul Weyersberg example is in very good condition overall, with a beautiful blade and intact leather on the handle and scabbard. All of the original silver plating is intact but showing its age with tarnish. The new owner can leave it as-is or polish it up if he or she so chooses. The original blue leather buffer pad is in place on the blade and the maker's mark is clean and crisp. The twisted wire wrap on the handle is in perfect shape and tight to the handle. Both of the nickel steel fittings are tight to the blade and the brass inlaid swastikas are in excellent shape. The original tip on this daggers blade is still straight and sharp. The scabbard is also in very good condition overall with nice, tight, original fittings and a tight, intact original leather covering. The original chain on this scabbard has two small soldered repairs, no doubt done while the dagger was still in German hands during the war. The spring loaded clasp is marked with "D.G.R.M." and is in perfect working order. The portapee on this dagger is in poor shape and coming apart in several places, however we felt it best to leave it alone as it is original to the dagger. If you have been looking for a neat Nazi dagger to add to your collection or to display with some of your militaria or weapons this early-production 1st Model Luftwaffe Dagger by Paul Weyersberg would be an excellent choice.
