British Army Officer’s Cocked Hat with Storage Tin
Description: This is a regulation full dress cocked hat (bicorne) by Hill Bros. of Old Bond St., London. The hat is black beaver fur with some edges wear both fore and aft, with black acorn motif cloth tape, black silk bow, and brocade tab with woven button on the right side. Both peaks have fixed bullion tassels, and the inside has a wide leather comfort band, pleated silk lining, and embossed maker’s label at the top of the crown. The hat is housed in the original japanned tin storage case with Hill Bros. brass plaque, and an irregular escutcheon with the owner’s name engraved in flowing script: “Capt. F.W.L. Moore". The case retains about 20-30% of the japanned lacquer, with the balance flaked to the underlying dark gray tin. Also, while the hinged latch is still present, the closure stud has been lost over time. Also included is the original white and red feather parade plume in the original cardboard storage tube. The tube is marked: “730 / Capt. Moore" on the lid, but is also marked: “Liet (sic) Colonel / F.W.L. Moore" on the body. This is a splendid example of a rarely seen piece of British military headgear, and would make a wonderful addition to any collection. SOLD Manufacturer: British Model: Hat |
